Mangrove ecosystems are extraordinary in that they protect the coastline, serve as the fish breeding ground, give refuge to diverse wildlife, and supply wood. Kuala Selangor Nature Park is much more than just mangrove trees in a swamp. The Nature Park stretches about 800 acres of three distinct habitats which include inland secondary forests, muddy estuaries and mudflats, and a brackish lake that is inhibited by wetland animals.

The park, as part of the Selangor River estuary, is home to a number of large bird species such as milky storks and herons as well as primates, namely silver leaf monkeys and long-tailed macaques. The area was a breeding ground of an endangered milky stork species before the program was suspended. An abandoned aviary still stands in the middle of the park.

The area also has more than 150 species of birds and an estimated 100,000 wading birds, comprising 30 species, passing through here on their annual migration. This bird watching is perhaps one interesting activity in Kuala Selangor Nature Park.

There are four trails to take to view the wildlife. There are the Egret Trail (550 meters), Pangolin Trail (1km), Coastal Bund (1.7km), and Langur Trail (1.1km) which lasts approximately 30 minutes, 50 minutes, 2 hours, and 2.5 hours respectively.

Observation hides and towers are available to visitors. You are advised to bring along binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens in order to see a better view of the birds and other animals. There are also chalets for those who are interested to experience a night in the wilderness.
